Pediatric Pelvic Floor
Our clinic is proud to offer specialty services to help children experiencing dysfunctional elimination syndrome. Many children experience difficulty with toilet training well beyond the age that typical children are trained. These children and their families often endure a tremendous amount of embarrassment and discomfort trying to find a solution. Our therapists are specially trained in effective treatment programs that include biofeedback, education, exercises, and positive reinforcement every step of the way. We work closely with the child’s medical provider throughout treatment. Children enjoy coming to Physical Therapy at FunctionSmart because we create a positive and supportive environment for them to improve.

Some abnormal elimination patterns may include:

-
Difficulty controlling urine/leaking
-
Increased or decreased voiding during the day
-
Frequent bladder/urinary tract infections
-
Constipation
-
Fecal Soiling
-
Nocturnal Enuresis or Bedwetting

We also offer pediatric physical therapy services for many other diagnoses including torticollis, gross motor delays, and more. Read on to learn more about our services and how we can help.
Sensory Processing Disorders
Sensory processing disorders in children refer to the inability of the nervous system to receive and appropriately respond to sensory information. This can result in overreacting or underreacting to stimuli, leading to challenges with daily activities. With proper treatment, children with disorders can learn how to understand and better gauge their responses and improve quality of life.

Nervous System/GI system disease and dysfunction
Physical therapy for nervous system and gastrointestinal (GI) disease and dysfunction involves the use of exercises and specific techniques to improve mobility, strength, and function. Common diseases that may be treated with physical therapy include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), abdominal pain, Hirschsprung's Disease, tethered cord, spina bifida, autism, and cerebral palsy. Physical therapy can help patients manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and prevent complications.
Real Time Ultrasound
Real-time ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the body internal structures. In physical therapy, real-time ultrasound can be used to assess muscle activation and bladder volume to provide visual feedback to help children learn how to properly activate their muscles during exercises. This can be particularly helpful for children with neuromuscular conditions or GI/GU dysfunction.

Developmental Delays
Developmental delays in children can affect their ability to reach important milestones such as crawling, walking, talking, and higher motor functions. Physical therapy can be an effective treatment option for children with developmental delays, as it can help their motor skills, strength and coordination. Through targeted exercises and activities, our physical therapists work with these kiddos to help them reach their full potential and achieve their developmental goals.

Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a technique used in physical therapy to help patients learn how to control their bodily functions. With pediatric therapy it is mostly used to learn control of muscle tension of the GI/GU tracts to help with abdominal and bowel/bladder control. This is done by using sensors that provide real-time feedback on these functions, allowing patients to adjust their behavior and achieve better control.
